Baptist Press – FIRST-PERSON: What does the Bible say about mixed martial arts? – News with a Christian Perspective

Posted on Sep 2, 2010

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (BP)–How should we as Baptists regard the growing popularity of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)? Simply put, we should hate it. Psalm 11:5 says, “The LORD examines the righteous and the wicked. he hates the lover of violence.” This is a hard verse for at least two reasons. First, it does not say that God simply hates violence, but rather, that God hates those who love violence. Second, it confronts our culture’s lust for violence, a lust which many Christians indulge rather than reject.UFC and MMA comprise a lucrative mainstream business of entertainment violence. Gate revenue for UFC fights in 2007 totaled $2.8 million and $200 million for pay-per-view. An international phenomenon, one UFC fight in Dublin sold all 10,000 seats in two weeks. Surprisingly, an estimated one-third of fans are female. UFC and MMA fighters have been featured on mainstream shows such as “60 Minutes” and “Dr. Phil,” and on ESPN. What exactly are people paying to see? MMA and UFC offer a simple formula. Two people are put in an enclosed or confined space, usually an octagon cage, and fight until one of them is deemed (by the referee) too injured to continue or “taps out”, meaning he just can’t take any more beating. Fighters wear minimally padded gloves which lead to more blood, and those bloody images are then used to market the sport. Those who pay to see the fights also pay to see “octagon girls,” scantily clad eye-candy between bouts. MMA and UFC are far from a harmless sport. they are a sinful amalgam of blood lust and female objectification that reflects our cultures growing desensitization to the inherent value of human life. Sadly, some evangelical churches are embracing the violence of MMA and UFC. one Florida church used an octagon stage design. I can’t imagine a church using a bar as a stage design, but apparently while it’s wrong to imbibe alcohol it’s OK to imbibe violence. Canyon Creek Church in Lynwood, Wash., even held a church event for UFC 100, where for only $10 a person you could watch the fights live on pay-per-view. Pastor Brandon Beals is referred to on the church’s website as “the fight pastor” and is quoted as calling it “very fan-friendly.” does he think it conflicts with Scripture? “If it was still no-holds barred, if it was underground or illegal, then yes. but this is legal and sanctioned. It’s got rules. You’re talking about stellar athletes, so I don’t believe it does at all.”UFC and MMA amounts to violence porn, a term which has been applied to movies with wanton violence such as “SAW,” where violence is not part of the plot, it is the attraction. Violence for violence’s sake, as opposed to instrumental or redeeming violence, desensitizes the viewer to the graphic horror of watching two people pummel each other for the sake of entertainment. UFC and MMA offer exactly the kind of violence condemned in Psalm 11:5. Ezekiel 7:23 decries, “the city is full of violence.” why are Christians supporting violence in the city? the Bible does not condemn all acts of violence. the Father sacrificing the Son is redemptive, like sacrificing oneself in defense of some innocent person or one’s country. In contrast, caged fighting is violence for the sake of violence and profit and as a vehicle for lust. In Genesis 6:13, God announces His plan to destroy all flesh “because the earth is filled with violence.” Some things, such as the love of violence, Christians simply cannot redeem. No doubt Christian MMA and UFC fans would argue that their sport leads to evangelistic opportunities. This same argument is made by those who drink alcohol at bars: You get the chance to witness. but Christians are not pragmatists, even when it comes to evangelism. God-honoring evangelism doesn’t adopt methods or practices that compromise holiness. Noble intentions cannot justify an unholy fellowship of light and darkness. Baptists believe the Bible should inform every aspect of life. the Bible teaches that sin brought death, suffering, and violence to creation. Violence is something we may justly tolerate but never celebrate. A soldier or policeman may reluctantly use violence as a last resort. In section XVI of the 2000 Baptist Faith and Message (BF&M) it says that Baptists must seek peace. Paying for entertainment violence is the opposite of seeking peace and violates the Scriptures reflected in the BF&M. Baptists oppose alcohol because it leads to drunkenness and because of its degenerative impact on culture: being linked to abuse and other societal ills. UFC and MMA market violent video games and UFC branded clothing to youth. another sign of the barbaric effect on culture is that women are now fighting in UFC and MMA styled matches. Early Christians were objects of violent persecution, being thrown into Roman coliseums for the amusement of the masses. Two-thousand years later, some Christians are now in the stands, cheering and supporting the blood and violence. Christians must avoid any support or association with the entertainment violence of MMA and UFC. we must not envy the men of violence or choose any of their ways (Proverbs 3:31).or have we forgotten the words of Christ? Blessed are the peacemakers. –30–Adam P. A late second-half strike from Alex Hughes proved to be the difference for Buffalo Grove in a 1-0 victory over Wheaton North (1-3-0) Tuesday afternoon at steamy Conant High School as the Lake Park boys soccer invitational hit the road in pool play.

BG’s narrow, but deserving win moves the young club to 3-2-0 on the season, and helps erase an ugly 4-0 loss last Saturday to the tourney host Lancers.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game out there today, but (you) saw a terrific keeper from Wheaton North (Nick Barry) make a couple of great saves,” said BG coach Rick Schoffstall, “and for us, we did a good job defending for most of the match, with several guys playing real well today on a hot and humid day for soccer.”

Schoffstall would single out Christoper Racz, Matt Bloom, Holger Kissner and Eric Schiller, among others, as well as Hughes. He was pushed back from his spot in the middle of the park to help defend the dangerous duo of Jacques Ntahoturi and Sam Klatt, each capable of making something out of nothing, if given the time and space to do so.

“Buffalo Grove did a very good job of making sure that we didn’t find either Jacques or Sam with any consistency, which made it tough on us to get anything really going in our attack today,” offered Falcons coach Bryce Cann.

Neither side had a high percentage of possession, as the extra heat from the field turf, and already stifling conditions led to chippy play and a first 40 minutes of play that saw plenty of take away-give away, with each coach bringing on fresh legs when they could in the hope of a surprise or two.

“Buffalo Grove set the tone with some early physical play, and we struggled with that as well,” offered Cann.

Things opened up after intermission, with the Bison quickly earning the run of play, and twice nearly grabbing the first goal of the game. Joey Madio and Erik Quintana were turned away by Barry just before the hour mark, and later, Barry stopped Quintana once again and Alberto Eloyza’s one-timer.

Long before this barrage on the Falcons’ senior keeper, they would finally create their best chance of the match on a neat half-volley off the shooting boots of Klatt that missed in close.

Later, the Falcons’ front-line duo would provide a burst of energy missing all day from the club, and with the help of Jordan Richert running out of the middle, both Klatt and Ntahoturi would get in close on Bison keeper Nick Landsberger, but were unable to finish.

Trouble in its own end, and a communication breakdown would cost the Falcons with the ever-opportunistic Hughes driving home the game-winner at 73 minutes when a loose ball fell to the senior just to the left of a helpless Barry, who would have little chance to stop the blistering shot.

“We still have a lot of things to work on and fix, but this was a good win for us today,” Schoffstall would say afterward as his team travels to Streamwood on Thursday in another tournament match, while the Falcons meet Niles West at the Lake Park venue.

What is the largest amount of money that a MMA fighter has been paid for an MMA fight?

What's the biggest purse of an MMA fight? and who is the richest MMA fighter ever?

to much.

Brock Lesnar made a million plus for fighting Randy Couture, and Chuck Liddell is the richest fighter in the history of the UFC

Fedor Emelianenko has been rumored to be payed couple of millions when he was in Pride. Nobody is sure but Tim Sylvia was payed $500,000 in Pride even though he lost to Fedor that night and Chuck Liddell as a champ made $250,000-$500,000 in UFC. but according to the research in the magazine I read, Time Sylvia was considered as the most payed MMA fighter in one fight but it also said that Pride fighters are definitely payed the most but they had no ways to find out so they weren't included. I'm not too sure about nowadays since that was one or two years ago.

But if you include sponsors and other things, Chuck might be payed just as much as Fedor but I'm not sure because I have no information about Fedor. Chuck on the other hand has couple of sponsors that pays him a million a year and some paying him 100k a year. He also claims that he makes anywhere in between $7-8million a year. Tito is definitely not the best payed UFC fighter by the way.

Major MMA Events In September 2010

August was an action packed month, but September begins with a little bit of a breather before the pace picks up again as we get closer to October.

2nd September: Bellator 27: Soto Vs Warren

Bellator’s multi-division tournaments will continue apace all month long, but perhaps the pick of their shows in September comes at the beginning of the month as Joe Soto puts his featherweight title on the line against last seasons tournament winner Joe Warren.

10th September: Shine Fights Lightweight Grand-Prix

Stepping in to fill a little bit of a lull as far as the major promotions go in the first half of September are Shine Fights who have put together a one-night lightweight grand-prix on pay-per-view.

Amongst the competitors scheduled to compete in the Friday night tournament are a number of familiar faces like Charles ‘Crazyhorse’ Bennett, Rich Crunkilton, Marcus Aurelio and Drew Fickett, making this an intriguing diversion for those looking to maintain their MMA fix.

In an interesting twist the promotion have asked fans to choose the quarter-final pairings.

11th September: Shark Fights 13:  Jardine Vs Prangley

A number of promotions have tried to step into the pay-per-view market in recent months, but Shark Fights have perhaps one of the best chances of actually making a decent stab at it.

They have a decent track record behind them of putting on fights, and they’ve brought an enticing card to the table headed up by a worth light-heavyweight fight featuring recently released UFC fighter Keith Jardine taking on Strikeforce veteran Trevor Prangley.

Backing them up is a number of name fighters with Sokoudjou Vs Houston Alexander, Paul Daley Vs Jorge Misvidal and Drew McFredries Vs Joey Villesenor.

It’s also just been announced that the full undercard will air on sherdog.com.

15th September: UFC Fight Night 22: Marquardt Vs Palhares

Originally set to feature Alan Belcher Vs Demian Maia in the headline slot, injuries have forced a switch around, and now Nate Marquardt looks to bounce back from a loss to Chael Sonnen when he steps into the octagon with submission specialist Rousimer Palhares.

The card, which will be live on Spike TV, also features a slew of lightweight fights like Efrain Escudero against Charles Oliveria, Jim Miller taking on Gleison Tibau, and Ross Pearson battling Cole Miller.

September 15th: the Ultimate Fighter Season 12 Premiere

Following directly after the UFN 22 event on Spike TV will be the premiere of the Ultimate Fighter Season 12 featuring Georges St.Pierre and Josh Koscheck as coaches to a new group of 28 lightweight fighters.

25th September: UFC 119: Cro Cop Vs Mir

You’ll have to wait a whole 10 days before the next major UFC event as UFC 119 rolls into Indianapolis with heavyweight stars Mirko Cro Cop and Frank Mir taking center-stage.

There’s a solid main card built around this fight including Antonio Rogerio Nogueira meeting TUF Season 9 winner Ryan Bader, and Matt Serra competing in a rematch of the TUF season 4 finale against Chris Lytle, plus the return of former lightweight champion Sean Sherk against the on-fire Evan Dunham.

September 25th: DREAM 16

After the conclusion of UFC 119 there’s only a few hours wait until DREAM 16 kicks off in Japan which hosts the final of their four-man light-heavyweight tournament which will be contested by Gegard Mousasi and Tatsuya Mizuno.

Elsewhere Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller gets back into the ring to fight Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba and Bellator’s Joe Warren returns to dream to face Michihiro Omigawa.

30th September: WEC 51: Aldo Vs Gamburyan

The final event of the month could well prove to be the best.  Topping the bill at the WEC 51 show on the 30th is future superstar Jose Aldo who will be defending his featherweight belt against former TUF finalist Manny Gamburyan.

In a particularly packed main card we’ll also see the long-awaited grudge rematch between Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner, former dominant bantamweight champion Miguel Torres throw down with Charlie Valencia plus the return of WEC 48 heroes ‘the Korean Zombie’ and Leonard Garcia.

Great Moments in MMA History: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Heath Herring

Welcome back fans and friends to another edition of “Great Moments in MMA History”. Today’s moment centers on the one and only Fedor Emelianenko, and with a career as storied as Fedor’s, it’s tough to pick what fight to highlight first. in what was undeniably the deepest Heavyweight division on the planet, Fedor Emelianenko reigned supreme as the PRIDE Heavyweight Champion with one dominating win after another, a streak of victories against stellar opponents that has yet to be matched (although current UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva is catching up). but it all had to start somewhere, and despite Fedor having won one fight in PRIDE before today’s featured fight, the crushing defeat of Heath Herring by Fedor Emelianenko is undoubtedly one of Fedor’s greatest moments.

Despite all that he would come to be, Emelianenko entered the PRIDE ring with relatively little fanfare. even after a convincing win over the gargantuan Semmy Schilt, most people believed that “The Texas Crazy Horse” would be too much for the stoic Russian. At the time, Herring was one of the best Heavyweights PRIDE had to offer, having only lost two fights out of nine leading up to his bout with Emelianenko, and those two losses were to Vitor Belfort and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, who were both considered (and are still considered) top-level talent. Herring was a former championship contender, and with his already-strong desire to win coupled with a newfound lust to get another crack at the Heavyweight gold, it should have been an exciting fight that ended with Herring making a dominant statement that he was ready for another shot at “Minotauro”.

This is not to say that everyone was counting Emelianenko out, far from it. Anyone with a brain could see how much potential was hidden beneath that stone-cold, unwavering gaze. but the fight with Herring was simply a matter of “too soon, too bad”. Herring was a man possessed, and Emelianenko stood in his way. As talented as Emelianenko was, he just wasn’t ready for the kind of powerhouse full-steam-ahead wrecking ball that Heath Herring had proven to be. Emelianenko was simply a man between a rock and a hard place. but then the fight started…and the rock ended up being Emelianenko’s fist, while the hard place ended up being Heath Herring’s skull.

I don’t think it’s a hyperbole to say that Heath Herring absorbed some of the most powerful Ground and Pound shots in the history of Mixed Martial Arts in his fight with Emelianenko. At the end of the first round, his face looked like a bizarre caricature instead of the actual Heath Herring. The term “pulverized” never fit better: Herring’s face literally looked like someone had taken a meat tenderizer to it. Herring showed incredible heart and a chin made out of concrete in that fight, but I was immensely relieved when the referee called off the fight, because I honestly no longer wanted to watch Herring take those kinds of shots. Looking back, the memory that stuck out the most in my head was how unnerved I felt at how Emelianenko could inflict that type of punishment and still have a blank slate for a face.

Fedor would go on to become one of the best Heavyweight champions of all time, one of my favorite fighters of all time, and one of the best Mixed Martial Artists of all time. but this fight, like no other fight before it, introduced the entire world to Fedor Emelianenko. it was the birth of an empire, and without a doubt, it was a “Great Moment in MMA History”.

And remember, fans and friends, if you’d like to see your favorite moment covered in “GMMMA”, I’m all ears and open to suggestions.

Great Moments in MMA History: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Heath Herring

Diego Sanchez vs Matt Hughes who would win?

I think Matt Hughes would win by decision because Matt Hughes would dominate for 15mins.

hughes the arrogant prick he is would think he could easily beat diego but look at how he got man handled by gsp his cockyness would get him his azz handed to himself again.

If they fight right now, Hughes would win. Give some time for Hughes to age and Diego to fix his stuff, then it could tilt. COULD.

Hughes would win this fight by ground and pound TKO.
